Word 46: יהוחנן (ul)

In Gen 33:5 we find the basic חָנַן, a verb that means shew favour, be gracious.

The first three letters יהו are, of course, the shortening of יהוה, Yahweh.

Our modern name John comes -through Greek- from this word and its meaning is the same: Yahweh was gracious, Yahweh had compassion.
